Sorry Mr. Brodhurst & Mr. Harrison cant be with you today, meetings for Mr. Brodhurst and a nasty broken bone in Mr. Harrison's case! Your tasks are:

1. Complete your unit 1 work. The evidence you need to have in your folders is detailed in the file called "Evidence you need in your folders for Unit 1" which is in the Unit 1 folder in the ICT OCR Nationals folder on the shared area. This will tell you what you need to have but you also need to open the Model Assignment pdf file which details the tasks and the markscheme pdf file which will tell you exactly how detailed the evidence needs to be to get you up to pass, merit and distinction level. This needs to be completed today.

2. If you finish this, your task for the rest of the lesson is the following:

a) Research a trip to a long-haul destination of your choice (e.g. Australia, Thailand, Hawaii etc) - gather pictures and info etc on the climate, attractions, methods of transport to get there, hotels, activities, scenery there etc.
b) Construct a powerpoint presentation to detail a trip to this destination, covering costs, how you will get there, scenery, climate, the hotel/other accommodation you will use, attractions etc. One slide each at least for each of these! Make sure your powerpoint is a mixture of text, images, graphs and video and is animated and has transitions in place.
c) If you get time, Create a poster in microsoft word or publsiher to advertise the trip to others - this should be designed to be put up in a school/college/workplace to drum up interest.

Dear all,

Sorry I cant be with you today, meetings i have to attend instead. Your tasks for today, in order of importance, are as follows:

1. Complete your Unit 2 Website Design work. This means you must have open the model assignment and the markscheme pdf documents and then work through tasks 1 - 7. Most of you should be well on your way to finishing and should be working on tasks six and seven, testing and evaluating your website. Make sure you save your evidence for tasks six and seven in folders AO6 and AO7 and remember, you should have two versions of your website, the one that you created originally and the improved version that was created when you alter the website after the testing phase in AO6.

Make sure as well that your designs for your website in AO2 match your eventual website - you have probably changed a fair bit from the design stage so go back and re-engineer your designs to match if need be. Your designs need to be fully explained too.

2. If you have finished your website, your task for lesson two and for the rest of the term is to create a multimedia website for a small business. This could be any small business but some ideas could be a trade such as plumber, builder or landscape gardener; a retailer such as a music shop, florist or clothes store; a service such as doctors surgery, car park or church; or online only business like a holiday firm, web design business or virtual university. The best website will be published to the web via a new web site we will purchase online!

For your website - make sure you do the following:

a) Decide which business you want to focus on and research exisiting websites to get some ideas about what sort of sites they have.
b) Create a logo and an advertising banner on Webplus to use on your website.
c) Create a six to seven page website to advertise the business. Suggested pages to include:
i) Master page to include navigation bar, colour scheme and logo
ii) Homepage with advertising banner and welcome image
iii) Examples of past work/jobs
iv) Stock list (e.g. for record shop/florist)
v) Location - where to find them
vi) Contact details - how to get in touch
vii) Customer opinions - feedback via a form

Throughout your site, make sure you make use of a wide range of the following website features:

- Tables to organise pictures, text etc
- Sound to welcome people to the website
- Images to illustrate the good featires of your business, things you sell etc
- Video to bring your site to life
- Marquees (scrolling text) to make announcements
- Forms to get opinions from your website visitors
- Flash animation to bring your advertising to life
- Caldendars to give communicate key dates
- Email addresses to enable people to get in touch with you
- Hyperlinks to access external websites
- Navigation bars to help users get around your site

The best sites not only work well but also look good - spend some time thinking about good designs/colour schemes/fonts etc for your website.

Work for Mr. Brodhurst's ICT group P3 Tuesday

Dear all,

Sorry i cant be with you today. What i would like you to do is to carry on with your unit 1 work, tasks 5 and 6. You will need to open up the model assignment document and also the markscheme document from either your user area or the shared area. The tasks you need are tasks 5 and 6 on the model assignment document. This means that you need to finish task 5, the spreadsheet which contains the costing information from your planned trips.

You can then start task 6, which is centred around a database for the people going on the trip. This database is saved on the shared area and is called StudSoc.mdb and you will need to open a read only copy of this and then copy the infomation in table 1 across to a new table in a new blank database (as the one on the shared area is read-only). Save THIS new database in your documents and then you can work on it, editing and deleting records etc.

For help on how to use Microsoft Access, don't forget to use the help menu within access.

Hi year 10,

Sorry I can't be with you today year 10 - please can you carry on with your Unit 2 (web design) unit. This means you will need to have your model assignment .pdf file open, the markscheme .pdf file and also your designs (from AO1) that you should have finished by now. Remember - your design section has to contain the following sections:
1. A page describing the aim and target audience of your website
2. A page listing the pages in your website
3. A section showing how they all link together - which hyperlinks, buttons etc
4. A "Master" section which contains the graphics/navigation/colour scheme that you will have on every page
5. The designs of the (minimum) five pages that you will build

Using webplus, you need to build your websites as closely as possible to your designs. Remember, they need to be 5 pages minimum and they need to contain the information from the Scenario section of the model assignment document - to advertise the hotel, to publicise the rides, to gather opinions about the website etc.

Make sure you look at other theme park websites closely to get a good idea of how they are designed, what they contain, the language they use and the graphics that are appropriate etc.]

This should easily take you the rest of this double lesson if not a lot longer!

Work for Mr. Brodhurst's Year 10 ICT Thursday P1

Sorry I can't be in today Year 10 - please can you continue with the work we started for Unit 2 (Web design). You have so far looked at some theme park websites to get a feel for how they are designed and built - so for today can you please:

1. Continue collecting images, text, graphics etc for your intended theme park website - save these in your AO2 folder. Remember you can re-work these photos in Photoplus to make them more "customised" to your website.

2. Start designing your 5-page minimum website. This means drawing it out using word, publisher etc and labelling everything about each page to give a full flavour of how your site will function, how it will look etc.

You must pay very special attention to the model assignment instructions to make sure you add all the features your site needs to have. Also a good idea to get the mark scheme open to see what constitutes a pass, merit and distinction and to make sure you don't miss any pass criteria.

Extra work for period 2 for year 10

Dear year 10

Thanks to Danny and Ben for dragging me from my sick bed. Anyway, a while ago you may remember drawing your storyboards for AO1 for the animation unit - unit 20. I left them on my desk in CR2 and I think someone has recycled them - so I need you ALL to re-do them. This should not take you too long, and needs to be done on A4 white paper - Mrs. Lawrence should have some in CR1.

To do this, review your animation and draw it as a storyboard - it must be a plan as to what the animation will look like IT SHOULDN'T BE EXACTLY THE SAME.

You should have eight sections on your storyboard, drawn in pencil and labelled in ink with a sentence to explain how each part of the animation will work.

When these are done please put your name on the back of them and put them on my desk, neatly - if there is other junk on the desk please put them seperately in a pile.

If you have finished this, something completely different - work experience is later this year and pretty soon you're going to be needing ot apply for jobs, courses etc so a cv (curiculum vitae) is going to be handy. First of all, have a look at this connexions page on cv advice. When you're done reading it, have a go at creating your own cv and saving it in your my documents.

Afternoon girls,

My apologies but I really can't be in today - have done my neck in and can't move (unless I actually want a stabbing pain in my back) so here is what I want you to focus on this lesson.

First of all, you should all have done your homework which was to clear up all the last bits of evidence for AO1 - file management. This was based on the list I gave you last lesson. Your first job today therefore is to transfer any evidence files you have created to your user areas either from memory stick or email - remember to save them in the correct folders.

After you have done that, carry on with your work for AO4 - creating a variety of documents for your student society trip - you should all finish this today if you are up to date and working well. Some of you will undoubtedly get on to AO5 today, which is to create a spreadsheet to detail the costs of two trips - all that you need to know is detailed in task 5 of the model assignment document in the shared area. Make sure you have this document open during the lesson for reference and also the markscheme document from the same folder on the shared area.

Work for Mr. Brodhurst Ps 1 & 2 Tuesday

Dear year 10,

I'm really sorry I can't be in again today - you may have seen me fit and well yesterday but I have done my neck in and can't move. I can type if I'm careful though so here is what I need you to do today. Your lesson today P1 finishesat 9:40 remember.

Most of you should now be up to AO4 on the Databases unit we have been working on - there are two more assessment objectives to work on today - AO5 and AO6.

AO5 - create a customised user interface. For this task, which is task 5 in the model assignment, you need to create a form which will be your "dashboard" and give yoou access to the areas of your database at a click of the button. To do this:
- click create new form in design view
- Customise it with a title, colours, background picture etc
- Then add command buttons to your form to take you quickly to all areas of the database (Open each of your three forms, run your reports, close the database, email your reports to someone etc)
- Look through Access's help files to find out how you make the form run on startup, so it is the first thing you see when the database opens.

This should take you to the end of P1; DO NOT GO ON TO AO6 DURING PERIOD 1. For P2, have a crack at:

AO6 - Testing your database.

- Create a word document which contains a 3 column, 5 row table with the tests from task 6 in it (database meets design brief, forms, queries etc) as the first column; the second column should be notes on how each area of your database works; and the third column should be notes on how you have improved the database based on the test results.

- You basically need to run through every aspect of your database and see if it all works - enter data in the forms, run the reports, work through every button and queery and see if they all run ok and give you the results they should. If they don't, make a note of what happens in the second column of your table.

- Even if the form, query etc works but doesn't look brilliant (e.g. layout not very professional, sloppy spelling etc) that is still an area you should improve on. A)6 should not be a blank table! There are always improvements you can make.

You are to carry on working on your Unit 7 (Databases) for lessons 1 and 2 - you should all be currently working on either AO2 (building your database) or AO3 (Creating queries to interrogate your database). By the end of today, your targets are:

Some to have finished AO4 (Creating reports)

It is ESSENTIAL that you have your model assignment .pdf file open, as well as the markscheme file, so that you know what your tasks are and how to make your evidence pass, merit or distinction quality.

Your homework, by next lesson, is to ensure ALL your evidence for AO1 and AO2 is up to date. You should have the file that I created for you during the last lesson to detail exactly what evidence you need for this - you saved it and sent it home to remind you what to do.

Save all this evidence as word files and bring them in on a memory stick OR email them to yourself on your webmail, then you can open them up in school.

Year 10 Work for Tuesday

Year 10,

Sorry I can't be with you today - I'm at a meeting. What I would like you to do is to start Assessment Objective 2 of Unit 7 today - that means building your database. To do this, do the following:

1. Open up (and KEEP OPEN) the mark scheme and model assignment .pdf files from the Unit 7 folder in the shared area. These will tell you what you need to do and to what level to do it to get a pass, merit or distinction.

2. Also open up your AO1 work, the design for your database. Remember, for a distinction your database needs to exactly match your designs - no differences. For a merit there is a little more leeway and more still for a pass. You MUST meet all the pass criteria remember.

3. Open up MS Access and start building your database. I would suggest the following order:

First - Build your Customer records table
Second - Build your customer records form
Third - Enter your customer details records
Fourth - Build your DVD stock table
Fifth - Build your DVD Stock form
Sixth - Enter your DVD Stock info etc

Remember each table needs to have at least 20 records.

Good luck - this should easily be enough to keep you going for Tuesday.

ICT Homework for year 10

Dear all,

Your homework task is to complete AO1 on unit 7 to at least pass standard. This means that you have to:

- Design three tables (customer details, DVD stock, DVD rentals)
- At least one form

To get a merit, you need to:

- Include one validation rule in your design somewhere
- Include one field that is a combo box (yes/no)
- Design forms for all three tables

To get a distinction you must:

- Include one input mask somewhere in your design

Remember - for EVERY field in EVERY you must describe field name, field type, field length, relationship, whether it is a primary key or not. Remember also to say whethe there is a validation rule, an input mask, a lookup box or a combo box too.

Relationships should discuss whether the data appears in another table or not.

See me Friday/Monday if there are any problems.

Work for Ms. Lawrence's ICT classes Thursday

Period 1 - Year 11

Year 11, you should be continuing with your OCR Nationals Unit 1 work - see the post from yesterday for more details.

Periods 2 and 3 - Years 9 and 8

You should recently have finished your websites for your band, including nav bars, rollover buttons and advertising banners. For today's lesson, please practice these skills further by creating a website for a small business - this should be different from your band website in that it should be professional, a bit more formal as it is representing a company and needs to make money! You can choose which type of business to focus on, but some ideas could be:

- A plumber/carpenter/electrician/builder
- An online shop for DVDs/Electronics etc
- A service such as hairdressing/beauty therapy etc
- A fairly wacky one such as dog grooming or mobile bungee jumping!

Basically, use your imagination. You may want to construct a website to represent one of your parent's jobs.

All the websites must:

- Have a professional style (check other business websites to see what I mean)
- Have photos/images to represent their work, show off their achievements
- Include some animation to attract attention to the wesbite
- Consist of more than one page of content
- Have both navigation bars and buttons to move around the website

Hello all

Ms. Lawrence is ill today, so here goes....

Years 11 and 10, your tasks today are to carry on with your Unit 1 work for your OCR Nationals - you are probably all at slightly different points in the work, but can I remiond you of several different documents/points:

1. The Unit 1 Markscheme - a pdf file - this will show you EXACTLY what you need to do to reach a distinction, merit etc on each assessment objective.

2. The Unit 1 model assignment document - a pdf file again - this takes you through each task for each assessment objective for the unit.

3.Make sure you are evidencing and saving this evidence in the correct folder for each assessment objective - they should be called AO1, AO2 etc.

4. Save all your files with sensible, informative file names.

You should all be working on one of the following areas:

AO3 - constructing your powerpoint presentation to detail the trip you researched for the Student Society. For a distinction it must be five slides long, a mixture of text and graphics, have animations and transitions, be of near professional quality, have speaker notes in relevant places, be spell checked and (later on) printed out in notes view.

AO4 - Constructing your minimum of three business documents. They must be, for a distinction: A mail-merged formal letter to be handed out to detail the trip; a flyer to advertise the trip, constructed using Publisher (the sort of thing that would be stuck to a lamp-post, window etc to advertise the trip); and a more-than-two-page information leaflet to be handed out along with the letter, containing graphics from more than one source (e.g. internet, scanned images, self-made graphics).

Dear all - sorry I cant be with you this lesson - I have to attend a meeting so probably won't be with you for most of the lesson. For today, your task is to complete your designs of your spreadsheet and email them to me. Yes, I know, Ben and Natalie (and maybe a few others) have more or less finished this. Please make sure:

1. For ALL of you, you must make sure that your labels in your designs have the actual formulas used in them - i.e. "(C3/D5)*2" and not "add up these cells and then multiply by 2.

2. Read through your guide (the file is on the shared area) to make sure your work matches the brief - you MUST meet the pass criteria.

3. If you finish the designs, you must email me your work (eb2927@cartertoncc.oxon.sch.uk) and then complete building your spreadsheet - task 2.

4. If you have finished task 2, email me your spreadsheet and start task 3 from the guide.

If you get stuck and need technical help, it is 95% likely that someone in the room knows how to do it! Use the knowledge you have learnt - help someone else in the room this lesson!

I'll be back in the lesson if I can. Remember: we have until xmas to get 6 assessment objectives done, which is over 2 weeks each - and therefore we are on schedule - keep up the good work.

Mrs. Gray's ICT work for Wednesday period 3

Afternoon year 11 - Mrs. Gray can't be with you today as she is ill. Your task for today is to work on task 2a of your model assigment (the guide to your model assignment is called Unit 1 Model AssignmentStuSoc.pdf and can be found on the shared area of the network in the ICT OCr Nationals, Unit 1 folder). This task is detailed in full on page 18 of the pdf file, but in brief what you have to do is:

Research possible destinations for your student socity trip - they must be either in the UK or reachable by coach in Europe - so no Greek Island trips unfortunately.
Find out about:
1. Activities you could do when at your destination (this could be v easy, such as what rides are at Alton Towers, or harder, such as what outdoor activities to do while in North Wales)
2. Accommodation you could stay at
3. How you would get there - transport details
You must record the real details of what things cost, company names etc as you will be creating a powerpoint presentation to launch the trip to your students and a spreadsheet to detail what ti will cost - so real deatails are required.
Record your info by bookmarking webpages in internet explorer (How?)

You also need to take a screen shot of you searching for information on the internet to show how you found information. Like this.

When you have finished unit 21....

This work is for all Mr. Brodhurst's Year 10 students who have finished their Unit 21 - this is for the rest of year 10 time while I am away in India.

Your task is to work on Unit 2 - which is not actually part of our intended course, but if you complete the unit you can still get certification for it. The unit is titled Webpage creation, and uses the two programs we have used for unit 21, Serif DrawplusX2 and WebplusX2.

Tasks
1. Create a folder in your OCR Nationals folder called "Unit 2".
2. Download the full instructions in the model assignment document which can be found here. It is a really big file - you need to look at pages 15 onwards. Save this in your Unit 2 folder.
3. Work your way through the tasks for the assignment:
- Task 1 - design a multimedia website of at least 5 pages
- For this you have to create a 5-page word document, with each page being a mock-up design of what your website will look like. Include images, labels, text etc.
- Task 2 - Create at least 5 multimedia webpages
- Using Serif Webplus X2, make up your website according to the design in task 1.
- Task 3 - Create functioning hyperlinks
- Task 4 - Create interactive elements
- Task 5 - Create a user form for capturing feedback
- Task 6 - Test the website
- Task 7 - Evaluate the website

You will probably need to look at several tutorials to get through this work, on the Webplus X2 startup menu (e.g. creating forms, which is in the "creating a personal website" tutorial, creating hyperlinks etc).

You do not need to create all the interactive elements yourself (although you could create flash animations using Drawplus X2 like you did in Unit 21) but you must observe copyright laws - you can't just nick things from the web.

This is a whole unit, and should take you a quite a while - maybe even longer than Unit 21 - good luck!

Work for year 10 ICT Monday

Your work for today year 10 is to carry on with your Unit 21 graphics work. So far, you should have done the following:

1. Completed task one, which is to research web graphics and fill in 4 of the research template files (found on the RM Explorer under shared area, ict ocr nationals, unit 21, resources). These research files should be based on a logo, an advertising banner, a set of buttons and a navigation bar or menu - all from different websites. Save all this in AO1.

2. Designed three web graphics - an advertising banner, a set of 3 buttons and a drop down menu. These designs should be done using the drawing tools in word and annotated to explain who the target audience is and what their purpose is. YOU MUST NOT MISS THIS BIT OUT. All this is saved in AO2.

3. Started making your advertising banner using DrawplusX2 - I have demonstrated this to you and it should be saved in AO5. If you are not sure how to do this, open up DrawplusX2, click on "tutorials", then "animation tutorials" then "Webplus 10 Flash Banner" to get a tutorial file up that will talk you through it.

If you have finished this then...

4. Have a go at making your interactive buttons using DrawplusX2 - if you can remember me demonstrating this to you last lesson. This might prove tricky! Again, if you can't remember, check out the tutorial on the startup page under "tutorials", "Level 1" and "Creating web button rollovers".

5. If you're still racing ahead at this point, you can start work on AO6 - presenting your work - by starting up Webplus. You can then insert your advertising banner onto your webpage by selecting "insert" from the top menu, then "media" then "flash" - navigate to your banner in AO5 and draw it in. See the screen shot below.

Buttons are more complicated. Select "Insert" then "Web Object" then "Rollover". A screen will appear - tick the "over" and "down" boxes and then click "browse" next to each one and select the over, down and normal layers for each one of your buttons. Click "OK" and draw each button onto your webpage below your advertising banner. See the screen shots below.

Make sure you save all this in AO6.

Dear Year 10,

What you need to work on today in ICT is your WebPlus 10 Flash banners. If you are not sure how to create these, open up Serif Drawplus X2, click on tutorials on the startup wizard, click animation projects and Webplus Flash Banner. This will open up a PDF file which will guide you through the process.

Remember - save all your advertising banner work in Unit 21>AO5.

For your AO5 (task 5) of Unit 21, you need to create a webplus 10 flash banner. I will talk you through this in lessons, but if you get stuck open up Drawplus X2, and on the startup wizard, click "Tutorials" then "Animation projects" and then "Webplus 10 Flash Banner" - this will open up a .pdf file which will guide you through the process.
